Better Screenshot for OBS Studio is a simple plugin that makes taking and sharing screenshots way easier.

Instead of saving huge PNG files like OBS normally does, it lets you use JPG or WebP to keep file sizes much smaller without losing noticeable quality.

You can:
  • Take screenshots with a custom hotkey
  • Choose the format and quality
  • Save them to a specific folder

Hotfixes

  • Rapid screenshots are now serialized, preventing re-entrant captures from overwriting shared screenshot state.
  • Original OBS images are deleted asynchronously after a short delay, with up to eight retries.
  • Cleanup failures are logged instead of showing misleading errors after the converted screenshot was already saved.
  • Qt TLS plugin paths are configured only when a valid HTTPS Discord webhook is actually used.

If you mainly need cleaner screenshots, I’d check whether the plugin can capture the source at its native resolution rather than relying on the preview. Also worth looking at OBS’s built-in screenshot options first - you may not need a separate plugin unless you need specific formats or automation.

The plugin uses the built-in screenshot feature, it takes the PNG format, optimizes it, and then deletes the original PNG if the option to remove it is selected. As of now, the native screenshot feature in OBS does not allow you to select the output extension. Plus, this plugin offers the option to send the screenshot directly to your Discord server via a webhook. Because the plugin itself cannot capture a frame from the currently rendered view, I decided to take the original screenshot and convert it instead.
 
thank you for the plugin! works as advertised and the jpg quality is superb!

two suggestions for the plugin:
- also send screenshot to clipboard (would be very handy for editing and sharing purposes)
- rename screenshot

Version 1.3.0 Release - Compatibility for OBS Studio 33.0.0

  • Needs OBS Studio 33 or newer. On OBS 31/32 keep using 1.2.3.
  • New install folder: unzip into C:\ProgramData\obs-studio\plugins\ (not obs-plugins\64bit anymore). Delete the old copy from Program Files.
  • Screenshots are faster and OBS no longer freezes for a moment while taking one.
  • OBS no longer creates an extra PNG first, so the "Delete original image" option is gone.
  • New quality slider for JPG and WebP.
  • New option to copy the screenshot to the clipboard.
